Ruminations of Robertine Barry
By Nicole Burgers
At my newspaper, La Journal de la Françoise, it has been part of my mandate to take one or two women per year under my guidance to teach them the craft and become bona fide journalists. I have been doing this “teaching” work now since 1899 and have turned out some interesting talent. Yes, it's hard to believe it's been about five years! I think it is important for us to continue to learn and improve as journalists and that is why I could not turn down Miggsy when she called me and asked if I would like to cover the World’s Fair in St. Louis.

I did not hesitate. This is a rare opportunity to witness history in the making and to be around other women journalists who face the same prejudiced naysayers who keep bellowing that we should remain in the kitchen, raising the children. Don’t get me wrong, this is a terribly important task for women, but there are a lot of us out there who feel that we have other things to offer to the world - the gift of prose and the ability to provide a different perspective on the goings on in the world.

Well, you can imagine a train car full of energetic, independent women full of opinions and vigour!

We spent most of the train ride devising a plan of how we would get started. We named our club and even our executive! I'll admit I was rather reluctant at first since there are already so many social clubs. But women spend enough time at events fighting back the men journalists and menfolk alike who try to elbow us out of the way because they feel we should remain at home.
